Skullfucking Sundays! Irkallian Oracle "Grave Ekstasis"

I seem to be spending the first part of 2014 still catching up with and waxing lyrical about all the quality DM that was released in 2013.  Irkallian Oracle's "Grave Ekstasis" is another one of these squally, squidy and horror inspired blends of DM that are synonymous with last year for me.

Available via Nuclear War Now Records "Grave Ekstasis" is that familiar blend of Aevangelist and Portal done very well and with blistering intensity.  Sit back and get lost in the ebb and flow of opening track "Ekstasis" and then by forced further back in your chair by the savage attack that starts off "Iconoclasm" with it's chanting lyrics and agonised cries mixed with blistering pace interchanged with almost doom death sections. By the time you reach "Dispersion" which opens like the mother of all motherfucking storms breaking, you know this is a must have release.

I hear Antediluvian as another influence in their sound too as the record progresses especially on "Trans-abysmal Echoes (Non-sense)" which is willd, squally stab of horrific DM, also on "Absentia Animi" with it's layered riffs and throaty splutters.  A superb find from a superb year, if we were talking wines here and not DM then "Grave Ekstasis" would be considered a 2013 vintage.

Excommunion "Thronosis"

Fifteen years ago I was twenty six, out of the metal scene and therefore ignorant to Colorado death metallers Excommunion and their debut album "Superion".  According to the internet this release was reasonably good and now, a mere decade and a half later on the band have finally gotten round a sophomore full length release. I suppose that given such a period of time it would be forgivable for them to have a sophomore slump really, however I am pleasantly surprised by "Thronosis".  Now don't get me wrong, the wheel doesn't get reinvented here, not at all.  But then that's not the point to the record I suspect.  "Thronosis" means "initiation ritual" and although it could be argued the music world has changed significantly since they last ventured with a release there's no real requirement for any initiation back into the world of death metal for Excommunion.  These boys can play, they can do death metal very well and they

Number 6 - Altarage "Nihl" The surprise I gave myself when I placed this filth-infested slab of raw and murky death metal outside of my top five this year is testimony to how strong a year it has been release wise.  "Nihl" tilted back my head and shat right down my throat before slamming my jaws shut and continuously strike my in the throat until I swallowed every last drop of their vileness.  A well delivered if not completely original take on an established genre.  Fuckin A!

The not quite the end of the year AOTY list!

I have a problem with AOTY lists.  Most blogs, forums, FB pages, Twitter accounts and media in general start them far too early.  It seems as soon as November hits the internet is awash with people telling us how good things have been for the last ten and a bit months - seemingly with no regard for the two remaining months that can still herald some absolute finds! Despite my protestations on this subject matter it does seem that if I am to be a responsible blog owner then this is the appropriate time of year to put together the list of titles that have left me feeling kind of warm inside over the past year.  There's ten of them, not twenty or fifteen.  No matter how good a year it's been no AOTY list should include more than ten releases it's what the basis of a "top" list is all about to me. 10.
