Number 6 - Altarage "Nihl"

 The surprise I gave myself when I placed this filth-infested slab of raw and murky death metal outside of my top five this year is testimony to how strong a year it has been release wise.  "Nihl" tilted back my head and shat right down my throat before slamming my jaws shut and continuously strike my in the throat until I swallowed every last drop of their vileness.  A well delivered if not completely original take on an established genre.  Fuckin A!

In Hindsight - Kreator, The Eighties Albums (no EPs allowed)

In comparison to most I am relatively late to the Kreator party.  One of the first digital albums I ever bought when settling back into metal after a brief hiatus some 12 years ago was "Pleasure To Kill" and I have spent many a neck snapping evening in its company since, but only over the past 18 months or so have I developed my exploration of the discography further than the excellent 1986 sophomore release.  Furthermore, I now own the complete eighties albums so though it an excellent opportunity for a blog post. 1985 - Endless Pain - NOISE Records  Recorded in ten days (a whole four days ahead of schedule), you could quite easily think that the record was done in one take end to end.  There's nothing polished here, no frills, no bullshit just straight up rabid as fuck thrash metal delivered with a wild simplicity.  At this stage the band are roughly 18/19 years of age and it fucking sounds like an album made by teenagers, full of energy and loose almost re...

Some Albums I Listened To In 2020 (part 1)

Godthrymm - Reflections When Hamish Hamilton Glencross left My Dying Bride due to "irreconcilable differences" he hardly dropped off the metal music radar altogether.  Continuing with his guitar (and bass) duties in Vallenfyre the former Solstice man first pitched up with Godthrymm in 2018.  Picking up vocals along with his more renowned guitar work, Hamish has started to forge yet another quality death/doom act which currently has fellow MDB and Solstice skinsman Shaun Taylor-Steels and the superbly named Sasquatch Bob in the ranks also. Reflections  might be the best doom record of the year for me.  The caveat being that I listen to very little doom so this isn't as bold a statement as it initially may sound.  With me having played the record three or four times so far in the past week I think it is fair to say that I still have some way to go with it before I can say I have unlocked all of the nuances and devilish detail contained over the eight tracks on off...

Serpentine Path "Emanations" - Album Review

With time being ever more precious here in the realm of Eminent Silence, opportunities to post are coming few and far between.  If ever an excuse was needed to break this trend then the latest release from death/doom titans Serpentine Path is most definitely it. "Emanations" was released today and after an agonising wait for a  release to follow up 2012's excellent self titled debut, proof that good things come to those who wait is very much evident.  It's a monolithic slab of crushing doom riffs and well paced death metal.  The size of the sound of the riffs on tracks like (album opener) "Essence of Heresy" and "Systemic Extinction" is mind boggling.  The addition of a second guitarist is a definite step in the right direction.  Yet, somehow the wall of riffs never gets overwhelming, it all appears to be well balanced and put together in a very mature and sensible manner.
